Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. All schools in England are responsible for developing children’s understanding of SMSC.
At Heath Hayes Academy, the Hero’s Curriculum facilitates learners to explore SMSC within their adventure. Opportunities within the community, local area and wider community are grasped and children experience a variety of people and places in order to gain greater understanding of SMSC. Observations, activities, events and opportunities are recorded on the GridMaker for our learners to ensure coverage across all areas is evident.
Spiritual
Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.
Moral
Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.
Social
Use a range of social skills; participate in the local community; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the ‘British values’ of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.
Cultural
Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
At Heath Hayes Academy, we provide many wider opportunities for children to experience. These include visits to the local area, trips to museums and religious buildings, orienteering, Commando Joe and holding events and performances.
